-
-
-
- The following minimum four Virus ALERT files have to be
- together in a directory in order to run a command line scan:
-
-
- VASCAN.EXE
- VASCAN.LNG
- VASCAN.SIG
- ALERT.KEY
-
-
- Running a scan from a command line is simple. Just type:
-
- VASCAN drive(s)/path(s)/file(s)
-
- Drive and path tell VaScan where it should perform its scanning
- operation. A backslash must be used with each drive designation.
- For example, to search both C: and D: disks enter:
-
- C:\ D:\
-
- Each drive in a list will be treated as an independent entity.
-
-
-
- When no filename has been specified, the specified path and
- all of its subdirectories will be processed. If a filename
- is specified, only the specified path will be searched and
- subdirectories will not be processed.
-
- Basically, think of calling for a directory at Dos. The same
- rules apply including the use of wildcards in the filenames.
- You may even specify *.* which will result
- in all files being processed.
-
-
- Therefore, you may use something like:
-
-
- VASCAN C:\firstsub\win*.* D:\anysub\*.exe
-
- or VASCAN D:\lastsub\win?????.*.*
-
-
- SWITCHES Use: VASCAN ? for onscreen switch display.

- THE LOG REPORT OPTIONS ────────────────────
-
- log output to report log file
- expertlog no heuristic flags in report
- logname =<filename> set path/name of report log file
- example of use: LOG LOGFILE=C:\ALERT.LOG
- append log file append mode
- Append works as follows:
- VASCAN LOG Automatically creates a
- log file named VASCAN.LOG
- VASCAN LOG APPEND Appends to VASCAN.LOG
-
- EXAMPLES ─────────────────────────────
-
- VaScan \*.*
-
- Process all files in the root directory. Don't process subdirectories.
-
- VaScan C:\ log logname=D:\test.log
-
- All executable files on drive C: will be checked. A LOG file
- with the name 'test.log' will be saved to the D: dirve.
-
-
- VaScan C:\medium.sub allfiles log rename rename=xxxx
-
- All files in the C:\medium.sub subdirectory will be checked.
- A LOG file with your filename will be saved to the D: drive.
-
- VaScan C:\ log
- VaScan C:\ log append
-
- Use of just the LOG command creates a log file named VASCAN.LOG.
- The use of APPEND adds current SCANNING report to VASCAN.LOG.
-
- VaScan log logname=(filename.log)
- VaScan log logname=(filename.log) append
-
- The current report is APPENDED to the stated LOG file.
-
-
- ░▒ - DETAILED EXPLANATIONS ────────────────
-
- 'ALLDRIVES'
- This option tells VaScan to scan everything scannable on the computer.
- Thus it will automatically find the bootable hard drive in most cases.
-
-
- 'ALLNET'
- Allnet automatically scans all logical drives available on a network.
- Since it is common that a particular drive is specified in more than
- one path, some redundant scanning may occur.
-
- 'ALLFILES'
- With this option VaScan will scan non-executable files too
- (files without extension COM, EXE, SYS or BIN). If VaScan
- finds out that such a file does not contain anything that
- can be executed by the processor the file will be 'skipped'.
-
- Normally, viruses do not infect non-executable files so it is
- not normally necessary to scan non-executable files too. A virus
- needs to be executed to perform what it is programmed to do, and
- since non-executable files will normally not ever be executed,
- a virus in such a file can normally not do anything.
-
- For this reason viruses usually do not even try to infect such files.
- Some viruses, however, can write to non-executable files as a result
- of 'incorrect' programming, and since it is well within the scope of
- human experience for someone to try and execute the file by confusion
- or a typing mistake, the 'allfiles' switch is provided.
-
-
- Virus ALERT scans 'allfiles' by default in all of the scanning menus,
- done strictly to guarantee an 'all bets covered' quality of scan for
- the average user, most of whom will probably never read this command
- line file.
-
- 'APPEND'
- If you use this option, VaScan will not overwrite an existing
- log file but append the new information to it. In other words,
- use this option to create an 'audit trail'.
-
- If you use this option often, it is recommended to delete or truncate
- the log file once in a while to avoid unlimited growth. You have to
- combine this option with option 'log'. (See example below).
-
- 'BATCH'
- By enabling this option VaScan will scan without displaying any
- messages. Therefore, the use of a LOG file is highly advisable.
-
- 'COMPAT'
- If you select this option, VaScan trys to be more compatible with your
- system. Use this option only if the program does not behave as you would
- expect, or even halts the system. This option slows down the scanner.
-
-
- 'DELETE'
- When the scanner detects a file virus it prompts the user to
- (K)ill, or (D)elete the infected file. The (D)elete option will
- do the same thing automatically without prompting the user first.
- But be aware that the Delete is only a simple Dos delete which can
- be undeleted.
-
-
- 'EXEC=.EXT'
- This option allows you to specify a particular executable
- extension group to scan with executables. In effect it
- tells Virus ALERT to treat the named extension group as
- executable files.
-
-
- 'HMA'
- VaScan detects the presence of an XMS-driver, and scans HMA
- automatically. If you have an HMA-driver which is not compatible
- with the XMS standard you can use the 'HMA' option to force
- VaScan to scan HMA.
-
-
-
-
- 'IGNOFILE'
- If this option is specified and no files can be found, VaScan
- will not display the 'no files found' message, nor does it exit
- with errorlevel 1. This option might be useful for automatic
- contents scanning.
-
- 'KILL'
- When the scanner detects a file virus it prompts the user to
- (K)ill, or (D)elete the infected file. The 'Kill' option will
- do the same thing automatically without prompting the user first.
- 'Kill' overwrites the files FAT entry with 000s, so the virus
- is history.
-
- 'MONO'
- This option forces VaScan to refrain from using colors in
- the screen output. This might enhance the screen output on
- some LCD screens or color-emulating monochrome systems.
-
- 'NOBOOT'
- If you specify this option VaScan will not scan the boot sector.
-
-
-
-
- 'NOMEM'
- If you specify this option VaScan will
- not scan the memory of the PC for viruses.
-
- 'NOHMEM'
- By default VaScan identifies RAM beyond the DOS limit and
- scans that too. This means that video memory and the current
- EMS pages are scanned by default. You can use this option to
- disable the scanning of non-DOS memory.
-
- 'NOSUB'
- By default VaScan will search sub-directories for executable
- files, unless a filename (wildcards allowed!) is specified.
- If you enable this option, VaScan will not scan sub-directories.
-
- 'PAUSE'
- When you activate the 'pause' option VaScan will stop after
- it has checked the contents of one window. This lets you
- examine the results without having to consult a log file
- afterwards.
-
-
-
-
- 'REPEAT'
- This option is very useful if you want to check a large
- number of diskettes. VaScan does not return to DOS after
- checking a disk, but prompts you to insert another
- disk in the drive.
-
- 'RENAME'
- If VaScan detects a file virus, it prompts the user to delete or
- rename the infected file, or to continue without action. If you
- select the 'rename' option, VaScan will rename the infected file
- automatically, without prompting the user first.
-
- By default, the first character of the file extension will be
- replaced by the character 'V'. An .EXE file will be renamed
- to .VXE, and a .COM file to .VOM. This prevents the infected
- programs from being executed, spreading the infection. At the
- same time they can be kept for later examination and repair.
-
- 'RENAME=(NAME)'
- This allows you to state you own extension name to be used. This
- parameter should always contain 3 characters; question marks are
- allowed. The default target extension is 'V??'. (See example below).
-
-
- THE LOG REPORT OPTIONS ─────────────────
-
-
- 'LOG'
- When you use this option, VaScan creates a log file.
- The log file lists all infected program files, specifying
- heuristic flags and complete path names. (see: Advanced
- Reader's Doc in the HELP Menu, for descriptions of the
- heuristic flags).
-
- 'EXPERTLOG'
- If you enable this option VaScan will not specify the
- descriptions of the heuristic flags in the log file.
-
- 'LOGNAME=(FILENAME)'
- With option logname you can specify your own name for
- the log file. VaScan will create the file in the current
- directory unless you specify a path and filename after
- selecting this option. If the log file already exists,
- it will be overwritten. You have to combine this option
- with option 'log'. (See example below).
-
-
-
- Example: VASCAN C:\ ALLFILES LOG LOGNAME=D:DOGBARK
- Example: VASCAN C:\ ALLFILES LOG LOGNAME=D:DOGBARK APPEND
- Example: VASCAN C:\ ALLFILES RENAME=DDD

-
- Because VaClean uses heuristic methods to remove file viruses,
- the name of the infected file is used when stating the command
- line instruction, instead of the virus name as is necessary
- with antiviruses which disinfect by signature code.
-
- Example: VACLEAN C:\Subdirectory\filename
-
- VaClean cleans on a file-by-file approach: clean one file, verify
- the result, and proceed with the next file. This helps you to keep
- track of which file is clean, which file is damaged and should be
- restored from a backup, and which file is still infected.

-
-
- ░▒ - DETAILED EXPLANATIONS ─────────────────────
-
-
- 'IMMUNIZE'
- This is a very powerful option, which can be used to
- clean an infected partition table file. It replaces the
- existing partition table code with a new partition routine
- containing some virus detection capabilities.
-
-
- If the original partition table is completely damaged and
- cannot be used, VaUtil will also search for data files on
- the hard disk which may allow the tables to be rebuilt. It
- is recommended, however, to have made a Recovery disk on a
- diskette.
-
- If your system configuration changes, e.g. you update your
- DOS version, or change the amount of memory, you need to
- update the information stored on the recovery disk as well.
-
- 'NOREPEAT'
- Normally, VaUtil will prompt you for another diskette after
- the immunization of a floppy disk is finished. With option
- 'norepeat' you disable this.
-
-
-
- Examples
-
- VaUtil immunize A:\
-
- VaUtil immunize C:\ norepeat
-
-
- Using the anti-virus partition
-
- If you use 'immunize' on your hard drive, the following
- brief table will appear on screen during boot up:
-
-
- Checking boot sector CRC -> OK!
- Checking available RAM -> OK!
- Checking INT 13h -> OK!
-
- Later, if your boot sector or partition table
- becomes infected, you may see something like:
-
- Checking bootsector CRC -> OK!
- Checking available RAM -> Failed!
-
- System might be infected. Continue? (N/Y)
-
- Some other messages that can be displayed are "No system",
- which means that there is no active partition on the disk,
- and "Disk error", whose meaning is obvious.

-
- EXAMPLE 1 c:\OnGuard.exe ems secure lock
-
- EXAMPLE 2 Device=C:\Alert\OnGuard.exe ems noboot
-
-
- ░▒ - DETAILED EXPLANATIONS ─────────────────────
-
- 'OFF'
- If you specify this option ONGUARD will be disabled,
- but it will remain in memory.
-
- 'ON'
- If you use this option ONGUARD will be activated again
- after you disabled it with the 'off' option.
-
- 'REMOVE'
- This option can be used to remove the resident part of ONGUARD
- from your memory. All memory used by ONGUARD will be released.
-
- Unfortunately, removing a TSR (like ONGUARD) is not always possible.
-
-
- ONGUARD checks whether it is safe to remove the resident part
- from memory; if it is not safe, it just disables ONGUARD.
-
- A TSR cannot be removed if another TSR is started after it.
- If this happens with ONGUARD it will completely disable itself.
-
-
-
- ░░ THE OTHER EIGHT SWITCHES ─────────────
-
- 'ALLEXEC'
- ONGUARD normally scans files to be executed only if they reside
- on floppy disks. Files on the hard disk are usually trusted if you
- scan your whole hard drive periodically. However, if you want every
- file to be scanned before executing, no matter whether on hard disk
- or on floppy disk, you can use the 'ALLEXEC' option. In fact good
- advice is to - use this option if you are connected to a modem.
-
- Unless drives are specified, 'AllExec' programs on all drives
- will be scanned. But you can also specify only select drives on
- which you want OnGuard to check files about to be executed.
- For example: OnGuard allexec c: e:
-
-
- Note - that option 'AllExec' only applies to the execution of files.
- When files are copied, modified, or created, OnGuard will always scan
- them no matter which drives are involved.
-
- 'COMPAT'
- In most systems ONGUARD performs trouble free. Sometimes,
- another TSR program can conflict with ONGUARD. If the other
- TSR is loaded first, ONGUARD will normally detect the conflict
- and use an alternate interrupt.
-
- However, if the other TSR is loaded after ONGUARD, and it
- aborts with a message telling you that it has already been
- loaded, then you can use the 'compat' switch of ONGUARD to
- tell ONGUARD to use the alternate interrupt.
-
- You can also try switching the loading positions
- of the conflicting TSRs.
-
- It is also possible that ONGUARD conflicts with other EMS or XMS
- using resident software. In this case the system will hang. Option
- 'compat' will also solve this problem, but due to extensive memory
- swapping, the performance of ONGUARD will slow down.
-
-
- 'EMS'
- If you specify this option, ONGUARD will use expanded memory (as
- provided by LIM/EMS expansion boards or 80386 memory managers) to
- store the signatures and part of its program code. Since conventional
- memory is more valuable to your programs than expanded memory, the
- use of EMS memory is recommended. ONGUARD can use up to 64Kb of EMS
- memory. Expanded memory is allocated in 16Kb blocks.
-
- 'LOCK'
- The 'lock' option completely prevents operator indifference by
- freezing the keyboard if ONGUARD detects a virus.
-
-
- 'NOBOOT'
- ONGUARD monitors floppy disks: every time a bootsector is being
- read, ONGUARD automatically scans the disk for bootsector viruses.
-
- If you change a floppy disk or go to a different floppy
- drive, the first thing DOS has to do is read the bootsector,
- otherwise it does not know what kind of disk is in the drive.
- And as soon as DOS reads the bootsector, ONGUARD checks
- it for viruses.
-
-
- If you don't like this feature, or if it causes problems,
- you can switch it off using the 'noboot' option. If you specify
- this option, ONGUARD will also require less memory because
- the bootsector signatures will not be stored in memory.
-
- 'NOEXEC'
- ONGUARD normally scans files located on floppy disks just before they
- are executed. You can use this option to disable this feature completely.
-
- 'SECURE'
- ONGUARD normally asks the user to continue (sometimes to cancel) when it
- detects a virus. In some business and institutional environments however
- this choice should not be made by the user. Option 'secure' prevents the
- user from continuing, and also disables the 'off' and 'remove' options
- so the user cannot knock ONGUARD offline.
-
- 'XMS'
- If you specify this option, ONGUARD will store the signatures and part
- of it's program code in Extended memory. An XMS driver (like HIMEM.SYS)
- needs to be installed to be able to use this option. XMS memory is not
- directly accessible from within DOS, so every time ONGUARD scans
- data, it must copy the signatures to conventional memory.
-
-
- In order to save the original memory contents, ONGUARD needs double
- the amount of XMS memory. Swapping to XMS is slower than swapping to
- EMS memory, so swapping to EMS is recommended if it is available. It
- is possible that swapping to XMS will conflict with some other software,
- so if you get problems, try using ONGUARD without the XMS option.
-

- 'REMOVE'
- This option disables VaDriver and will try to remove the
- resident part of its code from memory in an attempt to restore
- this memory space back to the system. Unfortunately, this can
- work only if VaDriver was loaded last.
-
- An attempt to remove a TSR after another TSR has been started
- will simply leave a useless gap in memory and could disrupt the
- interrupt chain. VaDriver checks whether it is safe to remove
- its resident code; if not, it will simply disable itself.
-
-
- ░░ THE OTHER THREE SWITCHES ─────────────────────
-
-
- 'FREEZE'
- VaDriver will freeze the computer when OnGuard
- detects a virus.
-
- 'MODE=M/C'
- On dual video systems VaDriver will use the currently
- active screen. It may be forced to use the alternate
- screen with option 'mode=m' for monochrome, or 'mode=c'
- for color systems.
-
- 'NOFILTER'
- VaDriver blocks ansi bombs by intercepting ansi 'reprogram
- key' sequences. If you need to use the ansi reprogram key
- feature, you can disable this with 'nofilter'.
-
- 'QUIET'
- ONGUARD.exe displays a rectangle with "*Scanning*" in
- the top left corner of your screen while scanning a file.
- You can disable this with the 'quiet' option of VaDriver.
-
-
- 'LCD'
- Some LCD screens are hard to read. The option defaults
- to higher contrasts.
